A variational minimization formulation for hydraulically induced fracturing in elastic-plastic solids

چکیده

A variational modeling framework for hydraulically induced fracturing of elastic-plastic solids is developed in the present work. The structure provides a global minimization problem. While fracture propagation modeled by means phase-field approach to fracture, plastic effects are taken into account using Drucker–Prager-type yield-criterion function. This function governs evolution fluid-solid mixture. Fluid storage and transport described Darcy–Biot-type formulation. Converging shocks in elastic-plastic solids.

We present an approximate description of the behavior of an elastic-plastic material processed by a cylindrically or spherically symmetric converging shock, following Whitham's shock dynamics theory. Originally applied with success to various gas dynamics problems, this theory is presently derived for solid media, in both elastic and plastic regimes. The exact solutions of the shock dynamics eq...

Spherical indentation of elastic-plastic solids

The finite-element method is used to perform an accurate numerical study of the normal indentation of an elastic-plastic half-space by a rigid sphere. The effects of elasticity and strain-hardening rate of the half-space are explored, and the role of friction is assessed by analysing the limiting cases of frictionless contact and sticking friction. Indentation maps are constructed with axes of ...

An Implicit SPH Formulation for Incompressible Linearly Elastic Solids

We propose a novel SPH formulation for deformable solids. Key aspects of our method are implicit elastic forces and an adapted SPH formulation for the deformation gradient that—in contrast to previous work—allows a rotation extraction directly from the SPH deformation gradient. The proposed implicit concept is entirely based on linear formulations. As a linear strain tensor is used, a rotation-...

Hydraulically pumped cone fracture in brittle solids

An analysis of inner cone cracks in brittle solids subject to cyclic indentation in liquid is presented. These inner cone cracks, so named because they form well within the maximum contact circle, are postulated to be driven by a hydraulic pumping mechanism. Unlike their more traditional outer cone crack counterparts, inner cones do not appear in monotonic loading or even cyclic loading in the ...

Stabilized finite element formulation for elastic–plastic finite deformations

This paper presents a stabilized finite element formulation for nearly incompressible finite deformations in hyperelastic–plastic solids, such as metals. An updated Lagrangian finite element formulation is developed where mesh dependent terms are added to enhance the stability of the mixed finite element formulation. This formulation circumvents the restriction on the displacement and pressure ...
